Worth the Shot

Locals, tourists, and people of all ages love El Califa de León tacos. Here, a visitor captures the taco-making process on her journey through Mexico.

Established in Mexico City, where its original restaurant on Avenida Ribera de San Cosme earned Michelin® stars in both 2024 and 2025, El Califa de León is recognized for its dedication to quality and simplicity.

Customers can savoring their tacos.

No table? No problem.

El Califa de León in Mexico City may not offer tables or chairs, but that hasn’t stopped its fans. The neighboring shop kindly set out a small table so customers can savor their tacos right next door.

Our New York City shop will have tables and chairs, though. And when we’re full, you can always enjoy your taco on the street — just like everybody does in Mexico.

The menu is straightforward, featuring 4 items: rib, filet, steak, and chop tacos, each made with premium ingredients and off-the-grill, hand-pressed tortillas.

Straight of the grill tortillas

The Tortillas

Our tortillas are made to order, pressed by hand, and cooked straight on the grill. We don’t make tortillas for storage — we make them for the taco in front of you.

The Meat

Our family’s butcher roots guide every taco we make. We know where the meat comes from, and how it should taste.

Guests can also enjoy the restaurant’s well-known red and green salsas, favorites for their fresh ingredients and balance of heat.

Two Salsas. That’s It.

Salsa Roja brings layered, mild heat, while Salsa Verde hits with true Mexican fire. Try them together on a taco. It's a simple mix you owe yourself at least once.

The result is Mexico’s Highest-Awarded Taco — brought to a new audience while keeping its authenticity.
